Cooking and Crafting with Rooted's Goodman Youth Farm

Join farm-based education experts Travus Maloney and Forrest Smart for a mini farm-based education mobile field trip, based on activities run at Rooted’s Goodman Youth Farm located on the east side of Madison. We will be cooking a recipe called Bear Food, a sweet wild rice dish with berries. We will also be using birch bark to craft small boxes and using some products that were harvested from the Youth Farm’s honeybee hives. We welcome youth of all ages and their families to join us in cooking some food and connecting with the land and life that surrounds us.


This class is best suited for parents and children ages 4-12. 

Please dress comfortably, all necessary materials and equipment will be provided.

*Fee: $27.50 for 1 parent and 1 child (includes tax & take-home materials)

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Travus Maloney received his bachelor’s degree in conservation and environmental science from UW-MIlwaukee. He served as an intern for the Goodman Youth Farm in 2016 and then moved on to other educational spaces around Rooted. In 2020 he came back to the Youth Farm to serve as farm manager as well as Rooted’s education manager. In his free time, Travus can be found exploring wild spaces with his wife and two children, cooking, and spending quality time with their four-legged family members.

Forrest Smart attended the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point where he graduated and received a bachelor's degree in Health Promotion and Wellness. Wanting to gain more experience and enjoy a change of scenery, he decided to move to Madison, WI to seek out new opportunities. Forrest found out about Rooted and the garden educator trainee program through a social media post from a current employee and friend. Having had prior internship experience with gardening, food systems, and nutrition; he decided to pursue the position as Garden Educator in 2022, which he has continued now into the 2023 season. Forrest enjoys many hobbies, including traveling, hiking, snowboarding, biking, seeing live music, and spending time with family and friends. Forrest also takes great pride in his culture and identity as a Native American, belonging to the Bad River Band Ojibwe, Forest County Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk Nation tribes.
